Long-distance bus travel in Thailand is cheap, extensive, and — on major routes — quite comfortable. The network connects virtually every city and tourist destination, making it an excellent option for budget travellers or anyone wanting to see smaller towns not served by flights or trains. Main operators: Transport Co. Ltd (The Transport Company) — the state-owned operator, operates from official bus terminals in major cities. Known as Bor Kor Sor (BKS) stations. Reliable and cheap but English online booking is limited. Nakhonchai Air — premium private operator on the Bangkok-Chiang Mai-Udon Thani corridor; double-decker coaches with seats that recline almost flat, meals, and WiFi. Worth the slight premium. Sombat Tour — reliable private operator for the northeast and north. 999 VIP — popular on southern routes. Booking options: online at Thaibus.com, 12go.asia, or operator websites; at bus terminal offices; through guesthouses and travel agencies (add a small commission but convenient). Ticket classes: ordinary (ธรรมดา) — basic buses with limited air-con, stops everywhere; first class (ชั้นหนึ่ง) — air-conditioned with limited stops; VIP/Gold — wider seats, more leg room, fewer passengers; Super VIP/Business — near-flat seats, meals, best for overnight trips. Prices: Bangkok to Chiang Mai (10 hours) approximately 600–1,200 THB depending on class. Bangkok to Phuket (12 hours) approximately 700–1,400 THB. Bangkok to Chiang Rai approximately 650–1,100 THB. Key Bangkok terminals: Mo Chit (Northern Bus Terminal) for the north and northeast; Ekkamai (Eastern Bus Terminal) for the east; Southern Bus Terminal for the south and west. All three connect to BTS or MRT stations. Tips: book VIP or Super VIP overnight buses well in advance on popular routes November through January; bring a layer — air-conditioning is frequently set to arctic levels.
