The European summer holiday window (June-August) coincides with Thailand's monsoon season — but this is a more nuanced picture than "avoid summer in Thailand." Understanding which coast has which weather pattern unlocks genuinely excellent and much cheaper summer holidays. The key: Thailand has two coastlines with different monsoon patterns. The Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Phi Phi): southwest monsoon June-October means this is the wet side in summer. Rain comes in heavy bursts but rarely lasts all day. Some beach days are perfectly fine; others are too rough for swimming. Accommodation is 30–50% cheaper. Many resorts are open and happy to accommodate. If water activities are critical, risk increases. The Gulf Coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Hua Hin): has the opposite season from the Andaman. The Gulf's wet season is September-November. June, July, and August are actually relatively good months on the Gulf coast — more settled than the Andaman. Koh Tao in particular has good diving conditions in summer. Koh Samui has a shoulder season feel in summer — prices are slightly reduced but weather is decent. Inland destinations in summer: Chiang Mai and the north are wetter in summer but the mountains are lush and green; temperatures are more moderate (27–32°C vs 38°C in the hot season); fewer tourists. The smoke season (Feb-April) is over. Chiang Rai and Pai are beautiful in the green season. Recommended summer itinerary: 5 days Bangkok (unaffected by monsoon; just hot and occasionally rainy); 7 days Gulf coast islands (Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, Koh Samui — good summer conditions); 5 days Chiang Mai (lush and green). This avoids the Andaman coast entirely in summer and builds a trip on the two best-value summer options. Price advantage: summer holidays in Thailand are typically 25–40% cheaper than December-January peak season. For budget-conscious families or those flexible on weather, summer is genuinely good value.
