Songkran 2026 takes place on its fixed official dates of April 13–15, with most major cities extending celebrations to the surrounding weekend. This is Thailand's most anticipated holiday — a three-day national celebration combining Buddhist temple visits and family merit-making in the morning with the world's biggest water fight in the afternoon. The 2026 calendar: April 11–12 (weekend before) — some cities start early celebrations; April 13 — National Thai New Year's Day, temple ceremonies, family gatherings, official water fights begin; April 14–15 — extended national holiday, full-scale water battles; April 16–17 (weekend) — some cities continue, particularly Chiang Mai. Best Songkran cities: Chiang Mai transforms its entire old city moat into a 6-day water fight zone — the most sustained, enthusiastic, and crowd-friendly celebration. Bangkok's Silom Road and Khao San Road host massive street parties on April 13–14. Ayutthaya combines Songkran with temple celebrations in the historical park. Practical essentials: waterproof bag/case for phone and wallet (non-negotiable — everything gets soaked); wear clothing you do not mind ruining (white clothes become transparent when wet — avoid); water pistols and buckets are sold everywhere from ฿20; stay in accommodation within walking distance of the action to avoid traffic hell; respect the alcohol service hours (no alcohol sales midnight–11am on the official holiday days). The tradition of gently pouring water on elders' hands as a blessing is worth participating in if invited.
