Koh Samui and Koh Phangan are separated by 20 km of Gulf of Thailand water and a 30-minute ferry ride, yet they attract meaningfully different types of travellers. Koh Samui (Samui) is Thailand's third-largest island — mature, well-developed, and geared toward comfort: beachfront resorts from the Four Seasons down to budget guesthouses, a ring road connecting all beaches, an international airport with direct flights from Bangkok and Singapore, and a polished service culture built over decades of upscale tourism. Koh Phangan is half the size, less developed, and still carries the energy of a place that has grown up around backpacker culture — most famously the Full Moon Party, held monthly on Haad Rin beach.
The Full Moon Party is Koh Phangan's most famous export: 30,000+ people on a beach, multiple sound systems, fire shows, and neon body paint. It happens every month (occasionally moved by a day if the full moon falls on a Thai holiday). If the Full Moon Party is your goal, book accommodation weeks in advance and expect prices to triple. If avoiding the party is your goal, stay on the north or west coast and you will barely know it is happening. Beyond the party, Koh Phangan has evolved significantly — the north coast has a strong yoga and wellness community (Agama Yoga, the Sanctuary), the Ang Thong Marine Park is accessible by day trip, and the beaches on the north (Haad Yao, Haad Salad) and northeast (Thong Nai Pan Noi) are genuinely beautiful and calm. Combining both islands is the most popular choice: fly or ferry into Samui, spend 4–5 days on Samui's beaches, then take a 30-minute ferry to Phangan for 3–5 days, then continue to Koh Tao (1.5 hours) for diving. The full Gulf island circuit is one of Thailand's classic routes.
