Thailand's west-facing Andaman coast produces some of the world's most reliably beautiful sunsets, because the sun drops into the sea rather than over land. Koh Lanta's west-coast beaches — Klong Dao, Long Beach, and Klong Nin — are among Thailand's finest sunset-watching spots, with unobstructed ocean horizons and beach bars positioned exactly right. Koh Phi Phi's viewpoint (accessible via a 20-minute steep climb) gives one of Southeast Asia's most famous sunset panoramas: the double bay of Ko Phi Phi Don with the Andaman horizon beyond. Ao Nang and Railay in Krabi have the added theatrical element of limestone karst towers silhouetted against the orange sky — magnificent for photography. The west coast of Phuket from Surin to Nai Harn faces the sunset directly; Promthep Cape at the island's southern tip is the classic sunset point, though it draws large crowds.
Beyond the coast, Doi Suthep temple above Chiang Mai offers a remarkable sunset — the golden chedi glowing in the evening light, with the city spread below. Doi Inthanon's twin Royal Pagodas at 2,500m altitude catch alpenglow that Andaman beaches cannot match. In Bangkok, the rooftop bars have turned sunset into an industry: Vertigo at the Banyan Tree Hotel (61st floor, no walls, dramatic height), The Dome at State Tower (immortalised in the film Hangover 2), and Above Eleven (Sukhumvit's most social rooftop) are the best known. Arriving 45–60 minutes before sunset and staying 30 minutes after is the standard formula — the post-sunset sky often produces the most vivid colours. Chiang Rai's White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) glows strangely beautiful in the low evening light, particularly during the cooler months when the air is clearer.
