Koh Phangan's Full Moon Party is one of the most famous events in Asia — a monthly beach rave at Haad Rin attracting 20,000–30,000 people at its peak. It has defined the island's reputation for two decades, somewhat unfairly. Outside the three days around each full moon, Koh Phangan is a genuinely beautiful, relatively peaceful island with some of Thailand's best snorkelling, a thriving yoga and wellness community, and a large long-stay expat population that chose it precisely because it is not overrun year-round. Thong Sala in the southwest, Haad Yao in the northwest, and Chaloklum in the north are the most liveable residential areas — quiet, scenic, and well-served by local restaurants and shops.
The island's north coast (Haad Khuat/Bottle Beach) requires a longtail boat or challenging dirt road to access and rewards the effort with one of Thailand's most beautiful and unspoiled beaches. Koh Ma in the northwest is a connected island (walkable at low tide) with excellent shallow snorkelling. Phaeng Waterfall in the island's hilly interior is a pleasant half-hour walk through jungle from the road. The yoga and wellness scene around Haad Yao and Sri Thanu rivals Bali's Ubud in intensity — dozens of retreat centres offer week-long programmes in everything from Ashtanga to meditation to ayurvedic treatments. Half Moon Festival (twice monthly) and Garden of Eden party offer the party experience for those who want it without the scale of Full Moon. The island is best visited outside full moon week (and the surrounding weekend) for accommodation prices and peace of mind.
