Thailand has over 1,400 islands, but a handful define the country's island identity. Koh Samui is the most developed and accessible Gulf island — excellent infrastructure, reliable flights from Bangkok, good mix of resort luxury and budget guesthouses. Koh Phangan draws the party and wellness crowd with its Full Moon Party and growing yoga scene. Koh Tao is the best value diving destination in Asia. On the Andaman side, Phuket offers the widest range of experiences from five-star beachfront to backpacker hostels; Krabi's limestone karst scenery is arguably the most dramatic in Thailand; Koh Lanta is the laid-back, long-stay Andaman alternative.
For seclusion, Koh Kood (Ko Kut) in the east is one of Thailand's most pristine large islands with minimal development and outstanding snorkelling. Koh Lipe in the far south is justly called the Maldives of Thailand — tiny, beautiful, and ringed by brilliant turquoise water. Koh Yao Noi and Yao Yai in Phang Nga Bay offer rural Thai island life within day-trip distance of Phuket. The right island depends on your travel style, budget, and timing: the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Lanta, Lipe) is best November–April; the Gulf coast (Samui, Phangan, Tao) is good November–June. Koh Kood and the east coast islands are best April–September.
