Koh Lipe is one of Thailand's most southerly inhabited islands, located in the Tarutao National Marine Park near the Malaysian border. It has earned a reputation for having some of Thailand's clearest water — the visibility in the surrounding reef can exceed 20 metres in the dry season — and for retaining a more relaxed character than larger resort islands further north. The island is small enough to walk across in 20 minutes, with three main beaches: Hat Sunrise (east, calm water, excellent snorkelling), Hat Pattaya (south, the main tourist beach with restaurants and bars), and Hat Sunset (west, quieter, good for sunsets). There is no vehicle traffic on the island — only the beach road and sandy paths.
Getting to Koh Lipe requires some effort, which partly explains its continuing relative quietness. The most common route is to fly to Hat Yai or Trang, then take a minivan to Pak Bara pier, then a speed boat (approximately 1 hour). Alternatively, the island is accessible by ferry from Langkawi, Malaysia — a popular option for those doing a cross-border trip. The ferry season runs from mid-October to mid-May; outside this window, rough seas make access difficult and most accommodation closes. Best months are January to April when visibility is highest and rainfall minimal. Accommodation ranges from budget guesthouses and beach bungalows to mid-range resorts with pools. Diving is outstanding — the Tarutao Marine Park protects the surrounding reefs and the dive sites around Koh Adang (a short boat ride away) are excellent. The island has become more expensive and more crowded than it was a decade ago, but by Thai island standards it remains one of the most beautiful and least overdeveloped major destinations.
