Khao Sok National Park in Surat Thani province is Thailand's most spectacular natural destination — a vast ancient rainforest said to be older than the Amazon, punctuated by dramatic limestone karst mountains and the turquoise Cheow Lan Lake. Camping here is one of Thailand's great nature experiences. Why Khao Sok is special: the park contains one of the world's oldest evergreen rainforests (estimated 160 million years old). It is home to tigers, elephants, leopards, wild boar, gibbons, hornbills, and the corpse flower Rafflesia (the world's largest flower). The forest is so dense that night descends quickly and the sounds of wildlife fill the darkness. Cheow Lan Lake: the park's centrepiece — a vast reservoir created by the Ratchaprapha Dam in 1982, surrounded by sheer limestone karsts rising 300–400 metres from the water. Floating raft houses on the lake offer extraordinary accommodation — wooden platform buildings with private rooms floating on the water between karst towers. The early morning light on the lake is genuinely one of Thailand's most beautiful experiences. Jungle camping options: 1. Camping in the main park area (near the park entrance): ranger-maintained campsites with basic facilities (toilets, freshwater) for ฿30/person/night (national park camping fee). Bring your own tent or rent from local tour operators. 2. Guided jungle treks with overnight camping: 1–3 day guided treks through primary rainforest with a ranger guide. These provide the best wildlife encounter opportunities — night walks to spot small mammals and nocturnal species, dawn bird watching. 3. Raft house stays on Cheow Lan Lake: not wilderness camping but extraordinary immersion in nature. Raft houses cost ฿600–1,500/night depending on operator. Evening boat trips on the lake and early morning kayak excursions included. What you might see: Asian elephants are present in the park but rarely encountered on short visits. Gibbons are heard every morning (their haunting calls fill the rainforest at dawn). Hornbills, kingfishers, and monitor lizards are commonly seen. Night walks may reveal flying squirrels, civets, and frogs. The Rafflesia blooms unpredictably — a ranger can advise if any are currently open. Getting there: Khao Sok is a 1.5–2 hour drive from Surat Thani (nearest airport and train station) or 3 hours from Phuket. Direct minibuses from Phuket and Koh Samui/Surat Thani are available.
