Canyoning — descending river gorges and waterfalls by abseiling, jumping, sliding, and swimming — has grown into one of Chiang Mai's most exciting adventure activities over the past decade. The mountains surrounding Chiang Mai, particularly in the Doi Inthanon and Samoeng districts, hold dramatic water features that create world-class canyoning routes. What canyoning in Chiang Mai involves: guided descents of natural water canyons, involving: abseiling (rappelling) down waterfalls of 5–40 metres; natural water slides down smooth rock formations; cliff jumps of 3–10 metres into deep pools; swimming through gorges; and scrambling over boulders. No prior experience is required — all technical equipment is provided and guides give thorough instruction. Main operators: Site Flow Canyoning is the most established and well-regarded operator in Chiang Mai, with guides trained to international canyoning standards. They operate year-round (best conditions: July–November when water levels are highest). Basecamp Chiang Mai also offers canyoning as part of their multi-activity adventure packages. The main routes: the "Nam Tok" route above Samoeng district involves 5–6 waterfalls of increasing height, a spectacular natural slide, and several pool swims. Duration: 5–7 hours. Difficulty levels: introductory (suitable for all fitness levels, age 8+); intermediate; and technical (requires previous experience or multiple trips). What to bring: swimwear, athletic shoes (provided in some packages), sunscreen, and a spirit of adventure. All technical gear — wetsuit, helmet, harness, carabiners, and ropes — is provided. Safety: Chiang Mai's operators run canyoning to international safety standards with anchor systems, guided abseils, and check systems. The main risks (equipment failure, unexpected water levels) are managed by experienced guides who inspect routes daily. Avoid operators with very cheap pricing and no visible safety certifications. Cost: full-day canyoning with a quality operator costs ฿3,500–5,000/person including transport, equipment, and lunch. Best season: July–November for maximum water flow. December–June is possible but some features are much reduced.
