The Full Moon Party takes place every month on the full moon at Haad Rin beach on the southern tip of Koh Phangan. What began as a small gathering of backpackers in the late 1980s has grown into a 20,000–30,000-person event in peak season, with multiple DJ stages, fire shows, neon body paint, and enough imported whiskey to fill a small ocean. The best way to arrive is by longtail boat from Koh Samui or by staying on Koh Phangan and walking or taking a songthaew to Haad Rin. Accommodation in the Haad Rin area sells out weeks in advance for full moon nights — book early or stay further afield and travel in on the night.
Safety is a genuine concern. The beach gets extremely crowded, pickpocketing is common in the peak crush, and bucket cocktails (Thai whiskey, Red Bull, and mixer sold in plastic buckets) are notoriously strong and inconsistently mixed. Wear old shoes you don't mind ruining from the wet sand and fire shows. Keep cash and your phone in a waterproof belt bag rather than pockets. Drink steadily rather than aggressively — heat, humidity, and dancing significantly amplify alcohol's effect. The party typically runs from around 9pm until 7am the following morning. If the full-on party isn't your scene, consider the Half Moon Party or Jungle Experience events held on alternate weeks — smaller, more curated, and often more enjoyable.
