Bangkok's urban rail network has expanded significantly over the past decade and is the most efficient way to move across the city, avoiding the notorious road congestion. The network comprises three main systems: the BTS Skytrain (elevated rail), the MRT (underground subway), and the Airport Rail Link (connects Suvarnabhumi Airport to central Bangkok). BTS Skytrain: operates two main lines — Sukhumvit Line (dark green, running northeast-southwest through the city's commercial and tourist heart from Mo Chit to Samrong/Kheha) and Silom Line (lime green, connecting the financial district to Saphan Taksin pier on the Chao Phraya River). Fares range from 16 to 59 THB based on distance. Operates 6am–midnight. MRT: the Blue Line runs from Lak Song through Hua Lamphong (old city train station) to Tao Poon, with multiple interchange points with the BTS. The Purple Line connects northern Bang Yai to Tao Poon. Fares from 16 to 42 THB. Operates 6am–midnight. Paying: both systems accept cash at ticketing machines (buy a token for single trips) or contactless cards. The Rabbit Card (BTS) and MRT card are stored-value cards that give discounts versus single-trip tokens and eliminate queuing — highly recommended for stays of more than a few days. Tourist one-day passes are available but only offer value if you plan 6+ trips in a day. Rabbit Card initial cost: 180 THB (50 THB deposit + 30 THB card fee + 100 THB stored value). Key interchanges: Asok/Sukhumvit (BTS/MRT), Sala Daeng/Si Lom (BTS/MRT), Mo Chit/Chatuchak Park (BTS/MRT). The Airport Rail Link from Suvarnabhumi to Phaya Thai station takes 26 minutes and costs 45 THB (express) or 15–45 THB (city line).
