About Sukhumvit
Sukhumvit is Bangkok's most internationally minded neighbourhood — a long, relentless corridor stretching east from Asok that contains more restaurants, bars, hotels, and shopping centres per square kilometre than anywhere else in the city. The BTS Skytrain follows the road almost its entire length, making the numbered sois (side streets) that branch off either side easy to navigate. Odd-numbered sois go north, even-numbered south, and each has its own character: Soi 11 is the hostel-and-club strip for backpackers, Soi 31 is a quiet residential enclave of embassies and bakeries, Soi 38 was the legendary night-food market before redevelopment, and Soi 55 (Thong Lor) has become Bangkok's most fashionable dining address.
The neighbourhood rewards explorers willing to leave the main road. Peel back one block from Sukhumvit and you find the covered markets of Pratunam, the genuine local food stalls of Soi 38's replacement vendors, the Benjasiri Park with its morning tai chi crowd, and the extraordinary Emquartier sky-bridge dining. Terminal 21 mall — each floor themed after a different city — is a perfectly Bangkokian fusion of tourism and commerce. Nearby Asiatique the Riverfront, accessible by ferry from Sathorn Pier, brings the Chao Phraya back into frame.
Long-term residents have made Sukhumvit home for decades. The infrastructure is superb: multiple BTS and MRT interchange stations, dozens of hospitals and international clinics, every major bank and grocery chain, and a co-working scene that has expanded rapidly since the pandemic. The trade-off is price — accommodation, food, and nightlife all sit above the Bangkok average — and a certain loss of authenticity compared to older neighbourhoods. But for first-time visitors who want convenience and variety in a single postcode, Sukhumvit delivers more efficiently than anywhere else in the city.
