When Is Monsoon Season in Phuket?
Phuket's monsoon season is real but often misunderstood. Here's what actually happens month by month — and what it means for your trip.
Quick Answer
When is monsoon season in Phuket?
Phuket's southwest monsoon runs from approximately mid-May to October. The wettest and roughest months are September and October. The high season — dry, sunny, and ideal for beaches — runs from November through April. May and June are transitional months with generally fine weather but increasing afternoon showers.
Month-by-Month Weather Guide
November to April (High Season):This is Phuket's dry season. Skies are mostly blue, humidity is lower, seas are calm, and all dive sites and boat trips are operating. December to February is the peak of the peak — the most reliable weather, lowest temperatures (still 28–32°C), and the highest prices and tourist numbers. March and April are hot and dry with temperatures occasionally exceeding 38°C. April can see the first sporadic showers.
May–June (Shoulder Season): The monsoon begins in mid-May. May is still largely fine with occasional afternoon storms. June sees heavier rainfall but most days have several hours of sunshine. Hotel prices drop significantly and beaches are much quieter. Many visitors find this an excellent value period.
July–August: These months are surprisingly mixed. The monsoon is established but these months coincide with European school holidays, so Phuket still receives significant tourist traffic. There are typically several sunny days per week interspersed with heavy showers. The west coast beaches have rougher surf and occasional red flag closures but can also have beautiful days.
September–October (Worst Months): These are genuinely the most challenging months to visit Phuket. Rainfall is at its peak, storms can be severe, and prolonged periods of grey overcast weather are possible. Boat services to some outer islands are suspended. These months offer the deepest discounts but represent the highest weather risk. October improves markedly in the final two weeks as the monsoon retreats.

Planning Around the Monsoon
If your priority is swimming, diving, and island hopping, visit between November and April. Book accommodation early for December–February as this period books out months in advance, particularly over Christmas and New Year.
If budget is the priority, May and June offer the best balance of decent weather and low prices. Accommodation can be 40–60% cheaper than peak season. Restaurants and attractions are less crowded. Rain typically arrives in the afternoon and evening, leaving mornings free for outdoor activities and beaches.
Note that while Phuket is in monsoon season from May–October, the Gulf of Thailand coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan) has its own separate monsoon cycle running roughly October–January. There is no single "dry season" for all of Thailand simultaneously — if one coast is in monsoon, the other is generally fine.
What to Do in Phuket During Rainy Season
Beyond beach activities, Phuket has plenty to offer on wet days: the Big Buddha viewpoint, Old Phuket Town's colonial Sino-Portuguese architecture and excellent cafés, the Thai Hua Museum, cooking classes, Thai massage, and Phuket's excellent restaurant scene. Elephant sanctuaries and jungle ATV tours are also perfectly enjoyable in the rain.
Some beach clubs and beach bars offer covered or partially covered seating and continue operating through the monsoon. The morning markets in Phuket Town are lively and largely unaffected by rain. Shopping malls including Central Festival and Jungceylon provide reliable air-conditioned alternatives on heavy rain days.
