Detailed Picks

  • Hua Hin
    200km / 2.5–3 hrs
Long sandy beach, cooler weekend climate, Thai royal family's holiday town. Mid-range to luxury resorts. Cicada night market on weekends. Easy access by minivan, train (scenic), or car.
  • Khao Yai National Park
    200km / 2–2.5 hrs
Thailand's first national park, UNESCO World Heritage. Hiking, waterfalls, elephants and gibbons, vineyards (Khao Yai is Thailand's wine region). Base in Pak Chong; resorts in nearby valleys.
  • Ayutthaya
    85km / 1.5 hrs
Thailand's former capital (1351–1767), UNESCO World Heritage. Wat Mahathat, Wat Chaiwatthanaram, Buddha head wrapped in tree roots. Day or overnight trip; cycle around the ruins.
  • Kanchanaburi
    130km / 2.5 hrs
Death Railway, Bridge over the River Kwai, World War II museums and cemeteries. Erawan Falls (7 tiers), Sai Yok National Park. Tiger Temple was closed; avoid wildlife camps.
  • Pattaya
    150km / 1.5 hrs
Mixed reputation — Walking Street nightlife is sleazy, but Jomtien Beach and Naklua are family-friendly. Cartoon Network Amazone water park, Sanctuary of Truth, floating markets.
  • Koh Samet
    230km / 3.5 hrs incl. ferry
Small island off Rayong, much quieter than Pattaya. White sand, clear water, simple bungalows. Ferry from Ban Phe pier (45 min) or speedboat (15 min). National park entry fee 200 THB.
  • Cha-am
    180km / 2.5 hrs
Just north of Hua Hin, less developed and more local. Long beach, weekend Thai holiday crowd, fresh seafood at the beachfront restaurants. Cheaper than Hua Hin.
  • Sangkhlaburi
    350km / 5–6 hrs
Far western Thailand near Myanmar. Mon Bridge (Thailand's longest wooden bridge), lake activities, Mon and Karen culture. 3-day weekend minimum due to distance.
  • Khao Sam Roi Yot
    240km / 3 hrs
South of Hua Hin. Limestone caves (Phraya Nakhon), beach and mountain combo. Less touristy than Khao Yai.
  • Lopburi
    150km / 2 hrs
Famous for the macaque monkeys that have taken over the old town. Khmer ruins. Monkey Buffet Festival in November. Quirky, photogenic.
  • Bang Saen
    100km / 1.5 hrs
Where Bangkok locals go for Sunday seafood lunches. Long beach with food stalls, strong weekend atmosphere, no tourist pretension.
  • Suphanburi & Sam Chuk
    100km / 1.5 hrs
Sam Chuk's 100-year-old riverside market is one of Thailand's most photogenic. Day trip or overnight; less foreign tourist coverage means authentic Thai weekend.

Transport from Bangkok

All these destinations are accessible by public transport. Quick reference:

  • Minivans from Mo Chit 2 (Northern Bus Terminal) and Ekkamai (Eastern) cover most weekend destinations — Hua Hin, Pattaya, Ayutthaya, Cha-am. 150–350 THB, 1.5–3 hours.
  • Trains from Hua Lamphong serve Hua Hin (4 hours, 100–800 THB), Ayutthaya (1.5 hours, 20–300 THB), and Kanchanaburi (2.5 hours including the famous Bridge route).
  • Hire car or driver for Khao Yai (essential for park access) and remote spots like Sangkhlaburi. A driver-with-car costs 2,000–3,500 THB per day depending on distance.
  • Bangkok motorway (Highway 7 / Pattaya, Highway 4 / south) — toll roads, much faster than regular highways. Friday evenings 17:00–20:00 are jammed.

When to Go

November–February is the sweet spot — cool, dry, comfortable for outdoor activities and beaches. March–May is hot; pick air-conditioned destinations or beaches with strong sea breezes. June–October is rainy season but rain typically comes in afternoon downpours with otherwise clear weather; lush landscapes, good for nature trips, slightly rough seas. Avoid Songkran (April 13–15) — chaotic for travel — and the New Year week when prices double. The least crowded weekends are Sunday–Monday or Tuesday–Wednesday; Thai office workers fill Friday–Sunday windows.

Make It a Long Weekend

Thai public holidays create natural long weekends. Watch for: Asalha Bucha + Buddhist Lent (July), Mother's Day (August 12), King's Birthday (December 5), Constitution Day (December 10), New Year, Chakri Day (April 6), Coronation Day (May 4). Booking ahead on these is essential as Bangkok empties to the beaches.
