Ayutthaya is ideal as a day trip from Bangkok — the main ruins can be seen in 4–5 hours. Stay overnight if you want a more relaxed pace.

Hire a bicycle at Ayutthaya station (฿80–100/day) to explore the historical park — it is large and cycling between sites is far better than walking in the heat.
