First Steps on Arrival
- 1
Clear immigration — queues at Phuket are generally shorter than Bangkok. Allow 20–45 minutes at peak season.
- 2
Collect your baggage and pass through customs.
- 3
Buy a SIM card at one of the operator counters in the arrivals hall.
- 4
Exchange cash at the bank booths inside arrivals — rates are reasonable. Withdraw 2,000–3,000 THB to cover initial transport and meals.
- 5
Pre-arrange your transport or join the official taxi queue — do not accept offers from touts outside the terminal.
SIM Cards
AIS, DTAC, and True Move counters are in the arrivals hall. A 7-day tourist SIM with 30 GB costs around 299 THB. Coverage across Phuket island is excellent on all major networks.
Money & Currency Exchange
ATMs in the arrivals hall charge the standard 220 THB fee. Exchange booths inside offer fair rates. Phuket Town and Patong have SuperRich and other competitive exchange offices for larger amounts. Most beach restaurants and shops are cash-only — carry sufficient baht.
Getting from the Airport to Phuket
Metered Taxi
Official metered taxis are available from the taxi desk in arrivals. Agree on a destination — metered taxis at Phuket airport use a fixed-rate zone system rather than the meter.
Grab
Grab operates at Phuket airport. Pick-up from the designated zone. Slightly cheaper than the official taxi desk.
Shared Minibus
Minibuses to Patong, Kata, Karon, and Kamala depart when full. Cheap but slow due to multiple hotel drop-offs.
Smart Bus
Phuket's new airport bus service runs to Phuket Town via the coastal road. Limited stops — not practical for beach areas without a connection.
Private Transfer
Pre-booked transfer with hotel or transfer company. Most reliable option for a late-night arrival.
Your First Night
Most Phuket hotels are in beach areas a 30–60 minute drive from the airport. Patong is the most lively area with the most restaurant options. Kata, Karon, and Surin are quieter alternatives. Confirm check-in time in advance — many resort hotels have a 3 pm check-in.
Common Arrival Mistakes
- !
Not pre-arranging transport — Phuket has no rail link and taxis are expensive. Knowing your route before arrival saves money.
- !
Accepting a ride from an unofficial driver outside the terminal — use the official taxi desk or Grab.
- !
Forgetting that Phuket airport is in the north of the island — even Patong is 40+ minutes away.
- !
Arriving during Songkran (April) without a hotel reservation — accommodation books out months in advance.
- !
Assuming the Smart Bus goes to beach areas — it does not serve most of the tourist areas directly.
