Arriving in Bangkok

First Steps on Arrival

  1. 1

Clear immigration at Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Don Mueang (DMK) — join the correct queue for your passport type. Queues at BKK can be long; allow 45–90 minutes at peak times.

  2. 2

Collect your baggage from the carousel and pass through customs (green channel for nothing to declare).

  3. 3

Pick up a SIM card from one of the mobile counters in the arrivals hall before leaving the terminal.

  4. 4

Exchange a small amount of cash (2,000–3,000 THB) at one of the bank exchange booths inside arrivals. Rates in the terminal are acceptable — avoid the first booths at the exit which charge higher fees.

  5. 5

Decide on your transport to the city before leaving the terminal to avoid being approached by touts.

SIM Cards

SIM cards are available from AIS, DTAC, True Move, and NTNT counters in the arrivals hall. Tourist SIMs cost 299–599 THB for 7–30 days with 30–100 GB of data and unlimited calls. AIS and True Move have the most reliable coverage in Bangkok. Staff will set up the SIM for you and verify your passport.

Money & Currency Exchange

ATMs in the arrivals hall charge a fixed 220 THB fee per withdrawal on top of your bank's foreign transaction fees. Exchange booths inside the terminal offer competitive rates — the SuperRich Orange and green kiosks (found in the city and some airports) consistently give the best rates. Bring some USD or EUR as a backup — they exchange easily everywhere. 2,000–3,000 THB is enough to cover your first day including transport.

Getting from the Airport to Bangkok

Airport Rail Link

45 THB30 minutes to Phaya Thai station

The fastest and cheapest option to central Bangkok. Runs from 6 am to midnight. Connects to BTS Skytrain at Phaya Thai. No luggage restrictions.

BTS Express Train

150 THB25–35 minutes to Makkasan/Phaya Thai

Express service with fewer stops. Slightly faster during busy periods.

Metered Taxi

300–500 THB including expressway tolls45–90 minutes depending on traffic

Use the official metered taxi queue on level 1 (public taxi rank). Insist the driver uses the meter. You pay tolls on top of the fare.

Grab

300–450 THB45–90 minutes depending on traffic

Book via the Grab app. Pick-up is from the designated Grab zone at the terminal. Fixed price shown in the app.

Private Transfer

800–1,500 THB45–90 minutes

Pre-booked with your hotel or a transfer company. Driver meets you in arrivals with a name sign. Best option if arriving late at night.

Your First Night

Most Bangkok hotels allow check-in from 2 pm. If arriving early, hotels near the BTS/MRT network (Sukhumvit, Silom, Siam area) are easiest to reach from the airport. Store luggage at the hotel and explore on foot. Convenience stores (7-Eleven, Family Mart) are open 24 hours — useful for snacks and toiletries on arrival.

Common Arrival Mistakes

  • !

Taking the first taxi you're offered inside the terminal building — always use the official metered queue on the ground floor.

  • !

Not buying a SIM card before leaving the airport — prices are the same and you'll have data for your first Grab booking.

  • !

Exchanging too much cash at once — you can get better rates at SuperRich booths in the city.

  • !

Assuming Don Mueang (DMK) and Suvarnabhumi (BKK) are connected — they are 30 km apart. Confirm which airport your flight uses.

  • !

Forgetting to keep 500–1,000 THB in cash for taxis — Grab doesn't always work perfectly during peak demand.
