About Yala Province
Yala is one of Thailand's three Malay-Muslim majority deep-south provinces and has been affected by an ongoing separatist insurgency since 2004 that has caused thousands of deaths across the region. Many Western governments, including the UK Foreign Office and the US State Department, advise against all but essential travel to Yala and the rest of the deep south because of the risk of attacks, ambushes, and roadside bombs; travel insurance is often invalidated in advisory areas. Travellers who do go for work or family reasons usually focus on the southern district of Betong.

Getting There
Yala has no commercial airport. Most visitors fly to Hat Yai (Songkhla) and continue by road or rail south, or use the small Betong airport, which has handled a limited number of domestic flights since 2022. Independent travellers should check current security advisories before departing.
