About Sakon Nakhon Province

Sakon Nakhon is a culturally rich Isaan province built around Nong Han, one of the largest natural lakes in Thailand, and the Phu Phan mountains to the south. It is closely associated with the Thai Forest Tradition, having been home to revered masters such as Ajahn Mun and Ajahn Fan, whose monasteries and museums remain important pilgrimage sites. The province is also the heartland of natural indigo (mor hom) dyeing, with weaving villages producing the deep blue cotton seen across Isaan.

Top Highlights

  • Nong Han lake, a vast wetland with island temples and sunrise viewpoints

  • Wat Phra That Choeng Chum, with a stupa enshrining four ancient Buddha footprints

  • Phu Phan National Park, with waterfalls, viewpoints and royal palace grounds

  • Indigo-dyed cotton villages such as Ban Don Kor producing traditional mor hom cloth

Getting There

Sakon Nakhon Airport has daily flights from Bangkok Don Mueang, taking around 70 minutes. There is no train line; buses from Mo Chit reach the city in around 10 hours, and roads connect easily to Nakhon Phanom and Udon Thani.
