About Pattani Province

Pattani is the historic heart of the old Malay sultanate of Patani and one of Thailand's three Malay-Muslim majority deep-south provinces. Like neighbouring Yala and Narathiwat, it has been affected by an ongoing separatist insurgency since 2004, and many foreign governments, including the UK Foreign Office and the US State Department, advise against all but essential travel to the province because of the risk of bombings, ambushes, and armed attacks. Travel insurance is often invalid in advisory areas.
