About Loei Province
Loei is a mountainous province at the western edge of Isaan, where the climate is cooler than elsewhere in Thailand and the landscape feels closer to northern Thailand or Laos. It is home to Phu Kradueng's famous table-top plateau, the riverside town of Chiang Khan and the colourful Phi Ta Khon ghost festival in Dan Sai. Loei rewards travellers who want trekking, scenic Mekong views and small-town atmosphere far from the typical Thai beach circuit.
Top Highlights
Phu Kradueng National Park, a sandstone plateau reached by a steep one-day hike
Chiang Khan, a riverside town of wooden shophouses on the Mekong
Phi Ta Khon ghost mask festival in Dan Sai, usually June–July
Phu Ruea National Park and Loei's cool-season wine and chrysanthemum farms
Getting There
Loei Airport has daily flights from Bangkok Don Mueang, taking around 70 minutes. There is no train line; buses from Mo Chit take 9–10 hours, and many visitors approach via Udon Thani Airport (around 2.5 hours by road).
