Pet Travel & Ownership in Thailand
Bringing your pet to Thailand or planning to own one as an expat? Here is what you need to know about import rules, local vet care, and life with a pet in Thailand.
Quick Answer
Can I bring my pet to Thailand?
Yes. Dogs and cats can be imported to Thailand with the right documentation: a microchip, valid rabies vaccination, a government-endorsed health certificate, and an import permit from the Thai Department of Livestock Development. Most pets from low-rabies-risk countries pass through without quarantine if paperwork is complete. Start the process at least 3–4 months before travel.
Import Requirements Step by Step
Step 1 — Microchip: Your pet must have an ISO 11784/11785 compliant microchip (15-digit). Implant this before the rabies vaccination for the timing to be valid.
Step 2 — Rabies vaccination: Administer at least 30 days before travel and within 12 months of travel. Primary vaccinations require a 30-day wait; boosters do not if given before the previous one expires.
Step 3 — Import permit: Apply to the Thai Department of Livestock Development (DLD) at least 2 weeks before arrival. The permit specifies the port of entry and is tied to a specific travel date.
Step 4 — Health certificate: An accredited vet issues the certificate within 10 days of travel. In the US, it must be endorsed by USDA APHIS; in the UK by APHA; in Australia by the state agriculture department. Bring originals and copies.

Veterinary Care in Thailand
Thailand has a good standard of veterinary care in cities. Bangkok has several internationally trained veterinary specialists at clinics such as Sukhumvit Animal Hospital, Kasetsart University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, and Thonglor Animal Hospital. Many vets in tourist areas and expat neighborhoods speak English.
Costs are substantially lower than in Western countries. Annual vaccinations (DHPPiL for dogs, FVRCP for cats), flea/tick prevention, and heartworm medication are widely available. Heartworm and tick-borne diseases are genuine risks in Thailand — discuss a prevention protocol with your vet on arrival.
Pet-Friendly Accommodation & Daily Life
Finding pet-friendly long-term accommodation is manageable in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, though many condominiums and apartment buildings prohibit pets in their bylaws. Standalone houses (baan) and villas in outer areas are more accommodating. Serviced apartments catering to expats often accept small pets with a deposit.
Dog-friendly parks include Lumpini Park and Benchakitti Park in Bangkok. Pet supply stores (Dogilike-affiliated shops, Central pet departments, specialist stores on Ladprao Road) stock international brand food and equipment. Online platforms (Lazada, Shopee) deliver pet supplies across Thailand.

- Microchip: ISO 11784/11785 compliant 15-digit chip must be implanted before or at the same time as the rabies vaccination for timing to be valid
