Bangkok Expat Community
Bangkok is home to one of Asia's largest expat populations — an estimated 200,000–300,000 foreign residents from every corner of the world who have made Asia's largest city their long-term or permanent home.
Quick Answer
What is the expat community like in Bangkok?
Bangkok's expat community is vast, diverse, and well-organised — the city has dozens of national and interest-based clubs, active online communities (InterNations Bangkok is the largest), extensive international school options, and a quality of international healthcare that attracts medical tourists. The community spans corporate expatriates, digital nomads, retirees, teachers, entrepreneurs, and long-term residents — each with their own networks and preferred neighbourhoods.
Best Neighbourhoods for Expats
Sukhumvit is the backbone of Bangkok expat life — a long corridor from Nana to On Nut with international supermarkets (Villa Market, Tops, Gourmet Market), international restaurants, gyms, hospitals, and BTS access throughout. Thonglor (Soi 55) and Ekkamai (Soi 63) are the most fashionable sub-areas — higher rents, excellent restaurants and bars, and a more Thai-international social mix. Soi 11 and its surrounds are popular with younger expats.
Silom/Sathorn attracts finance and business expats — proximity to the CBD, good BTS access, and a more professional atmosphere. Ari (near Sanam Pao BTS) has grown into a popular area for families and creatives — tree-lined streets, local cafes, good value restaurants, and a neighbourhood feel rare in central Bangkok. Phra Khanong/On Nut offers similar international infrastructure to Sukhumvit at 30–40% lower rents.
Expat Networks and Social Life
InterNations Bangkok is the city's largest expat networking organisation with monthly events and online groups. The British Club Bangkok (on Suriwong Road, founded 1903) has a pool, sports facilities, and a full social calendar. The American Women's Club, Australian-New Zealand Association, and dozens of national associations provide community for specific nationalities.
Facebook remains the most active platform for Bangkok expat community — groups like "Expats in Bangkok" and area-specific groups (Thonglor, Ari, etc.) have tens of thousands of members sharing advice and organising meetups. Reddit's r/ThailandTourism and r/digitalnomad have active Bangkok sub-discussions. Hash House Harriers Bangkok runs regular social runs for the active expat community.

International Schools and Family Life
Bangkok has over 50 international schools offering British, American, IB, and other curricula. The most prestigious are: Bangkok Patana School (British, Bearing area), International School Bangkok — ISB (American, Nichada Thani near Don Mueang), NIST International School (IB, Sukhumvit area), and Shrewsbury International School. Fees are high — 500,000–900,000 THB annually — but the schools are excellent and offer communities within which expat family life centres.
The Nichada Thani compound near Don Mueang Airport is Bangkok's largest expat compound — a gated community with ISB on-site, American Club facilities, and primarily American expat families. It provides a seamless American-style environment that some families find reassuring and others find too insular. Many expats prefer to live in mixed Thai-expat neighbourhoods for a more authentic experience.
