Is Thailand Good for Families?

Thailand is one of Southeast Asia's most family-friendly destinations — warm, welcoming, with world-class beaches, and exceptional value. Here is what you need to know before travelling with kids.

Quick Answer

Is Thailand good for families?

Yes. Thailand is an excellent family destination. Thai culture is genuinely welcoming of children, the beaches and natural attractions are world-class, family rooms and connecting rooms are widely available, and the food is varied enough to suit even fussy eaters. The main considerations are heat, managing food hygiene, and choosing the right destinations.

Best Family Destinations

Chiang Maiis Thailand's best family city — cooler than Bangkok, easily navigable, and packed with child-friendly activities: elephant sanctuaries, cooking classes, zip lines, night markets, and temple visits. The pace is calm and the city is safe and walkable.

Koh Lanta offers the best combination of calm beaches, clear water, and relaxed atmosphere for beach-focused family holidays. The west coast beaches have gentle, shallow surf ideal for young children.

Hua Hin is a convenient beach destination 3.5 hours from Bangkok with waterparks (Vana Nava and Cartoon Network Amazone), a calm beach, and excellent family resort hotels. Popular with Bangkok residents for weekend breaks.

Practical Tips for Family Travel

Book accommodation with a pool — Thailand's heat makes a pool essential for children's entertainment and cooling down. Most mid-range and above hotels have pools. Family rooms are widely available; ask specifically for connecting rooms or family suites when booking.

Sun protection is critical — Thailand's UV index regularly hits 11+. Apply high SPF sunscreen every 2 hours and keep children covered or in shade during 11am–3pm. Heat exhaustion can develop quickly in young children; keep everyone well hydrated and take midday breaks in air conditioning.

Elephant Experiences

If visiting an elephant sanctuary with children, choose ethical operations that do not offer riding. The ENP (Elephant Nature Park) in Chiang Mai and Elephant Hills in Khao Sok are well-regarded. Children aged 3+ can usually participate in feeding and bathing activities.

Health and Safety for Kids

Apply DEET-based mosquito repellent on children (30% DEET is safe for children over 2 months). Dengue fever is present in Thailand and can be serious in children. Ensure vaccinations are current — Hepatitis A is particularly recommended. Carry a basic medical kit with rehydration sachets, child paracetamol, antihistamine, and antiseptic. Private hospitals in Bangkok and Chiang Mai have excellent paediatric wards.
