Koh Samui or Phuket? Which Island Is Better?
Both are Thailand's most developed island destinations — but they are on different coasts, have different weather patterns, and suit different visitors.
Quick Answer
Is Koh Samui or Phuket better?
Phuket is better for most visitors — it has more variety, better international connections, more dramatic scenery, and a wider range of resorts and activities. Koh Samui is better when Phuket's monsoon season makes the Andaman coast unsuitable (May–October), and for those who prefer a slightly smaller, less frenetic island. The weather calendar is often the deciding factor.
The Case for Phuket
Phuket is Thailand's largest island and has the most developed tourism infrastructure in the country. Its international airport receives direct flights from Europe, Australia, China, and across Asia — often significantly cheaper and more convenient than reaching Koh Samui, which requires a connection via Bangkok on most routes. For visitors whose primary decision is a beach holiday in Thailand, Phuket's accessibility is a significant practical advantage.
The island's west coast beaches — particularly Kata, Karon, Bang Tao, and Surin — are genuinely beautiful from November to April when the Andaman Sea is calm and clear. Day trips to Phi Phi Islands, Phang Nga Bay (James Bond Island), and snorkelling at various Andaman sites are world-class. Phuket also has excellent diversity of experience beyond the beach: Phuket Town's Sino-Portuguese architecture and food scene, elephant sanctuaries, markets, and a genuinely good restaurant scene across multiple cuisines.
The Case for Koh Samui
Koh Samui's strongest argument is its Gulf-coast weather pattern. From May to September, when Phuket's Andaman coast is in the grip of its monsoon, Koh Samui typically enjoys calmer conditions and is the go-to Thai island for this period. Many long-stay visitors to Thailand use Phuket from November to April and Koh Samui from June to September, effectively living in Thailand's two great beach destinations in an annual rotation.
Koh Samui's north and east coast beaches — Mae Nam, Bophut (the Fisherman's Village area), Choeng Mon — are quieter and more charming than the busy Chaweng strip. The island has a genuinely good restaurant scene, particularly around Fisherman's Village, and the resort infrastructure rivals Phuket at the luxury end. The Big Buddha temple and Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks are cultural curiosities; the interior waterfalls and viewpoints reward exploration by scooter.
Use the Weather Calendar to Decide
Size, Scale, and Atmosphere
Phuket is considerably larger than Koh Samui — roughly 576 sq km versus 228 sq km. This means more variety and the ability to escape crowds by choosing less-developed areas. It also means Phuket can feel overwhelming or sprawling to visitors expecting a compact island experience. Getting around Phuket without a scooter or rented car requires Grab or songthaews, which are not always convenient.
Koh Samui has a more compact, navigable feel. A scooter gets you around the entire island in a day comfortably. The Fisherman's Village area on the north coast has a genuinely pleasant evening atmosphere — restaurants spilling onto the street, a Friday night walking street market, and a relaxed pace that Patong Beach in Phuket does not offer. For visitors who want a quieter, more intimate island experience, Koh Samui (especially in the north) is the better choice.
