Golf in Thailand

Thailand is Asia's leading golf destination — with over 250 courses across the country, year-round playing conditions, world-class resort facilities, and green fees that represent extraordinary value compared to comparable courses in Japan, Australia, or Europe. The combination of impeccably maintained fairways, the unique caddy culture (caddies are provided and mandatory at most courses), and post-round facilities in beautiful resort settings has made Thailand the destination of choice for golf tourism from across Asia and beyond.

Golf by Region

Bangkok & Surrounds

Destination guide

Bangkok and its satellite areas have the highest concentration of golf courses in Thailand — over 50 within 60km of the city centre. The city's flat terrain and year-round playability make it Asia's most prolific golf destination by course count. Green fees range from 1,500 THB at public courses to 5,000+ THB at premium resort courses. Top courses include Alpine Golf Club, Nikanti Golf Club, and Vintage Club.

  • Nikanti Golf Club — consistently rated among Thailand's best
  • Alpine Golf Club — host of numerous Asian Tour events
  • Vintage Club — private feel, excellent condition
  • Green fees: 1,500–5,000 THB midweek

Hua Hin

Destination guide

Hua Hin is Thailand's dedicated golf resort town — a 3-hour drive south of Bangkok, with over 15 courses concentrated in a relatively small area. The Royal Hua Hin Golf Course (1924) is the oldest in Thailand. Black Mountain Golf Club consistently tops international rankings and has hosted major Asian Tour events. The combination of golf, beach, and a town that doesn't feel overwhelmingly touristy makes Hua Hin the top choice for dedicated golf trips.

  • Black Mountain Golf Club — ranked among Asia's best
  • Banyan Golf Club — immaculate fairways, good value
  • Royal Hua Hin — historic course, more character than condition
  • Green fees: 2,000–4,500 THB

Phuket

Destination guide

Phuket's hilly terrain produces some of Thailand's most scenic courses, though it also means more cart-dependent play. Loch Palm, Red Mountain, and Mission Hills are well regarded. Green fees are higher than Bangkok or Hua Hin — expect 2,500–6,000 THB — but caddies (mandatory at most courses, 300–500 THB) provide genuine local knowledge on the undulating layouts.

  • Red Mountain Golf Club — hillside course with panoramic views
  • Laguna Golf Phuket — inside the Bang Tao resort complex
  • Loch Palm Golf Club — valley setting, peaceful
  • Green fees: 2,500–6,000 THB

Chiang Mai

Destination guide

Chiang Mai's mountain setting produces cool, pleasant playing conditions year-round, particularly October–February. Gassan Lake City, Chiang Mai Highlands, and Alpine Golf Club (Chiang Mai) are the area's top courses. The scenery — mountains framing fairways, morning mist over water hazards — is among the most beautiful in Thai golf. Green fees 1,500–3,500 THB.

  • Chiang Mai Highlands Golf & Spa Resort
  • Gassan Lake City Golf & Convention Club
  • Alpine Golf & Sports Club — sister to Bangkok's Alpine
  • Green fees: 1,500–3,500 THB

Thai Golf Culture & Practical Tips

  • Caddies are mandatory at most Thai golf courses and cost 300–500 THB plus tip. They carry bags, read greens, and provide yardage.
  • Caddy tip etiquette: 200–300 THB for a good caddy on a full 18-hole round is standard.
  • Most courses require collared shirts; jeans and denim are prohibited. Shorts are acceptable.
  • Cart hire is separate from green fees at most clubs — typically 500–800 THB for 18 holes.
  • Weekday rates are typically 20–40% lower than weekend rates. Book 24–48 hours ahead for popular courses.
  • Many courses offer 'twilight' rates (from 1pm or 2pm) at 30–50% discount for those who don't need a full round.
