Family-Friendly Thailand

Thailand is an excellent family destination — Thais are famously fond of children, the food culture accommodates young eaters more easily than many assume, the range of activities suits every age group, and the infrastructure for family travel (comfortable accommodation, accessible transport, quality healthcare) is strong in every major destination. The main challenges are heat management and avoiding food that's too spicy. Both are easily handled with preparation.

Practical Tips for Families

  • Pack rehydration sachets and electrolyte tablets — children dehydrate quickly in Thai heat.
  • 7-Eleven and Family Mart are found everywhere and stock nappies, formula, and basic medicines.
  • Most mid-range Thai hotels provide cots on request at no extra charge.
  • Child seats in taxis and Grab are rare — bring a portable travel harness for young children.
  • Thailand's pharmacies stock children's paracetamol (Panadol) reliably. Hospital-grade care is available at Bangkok Hospital and Bumrungrad for serious issues.
  • Thai food is generally manageable for children — khao man gai, pad Thai with no chilli, and mango sticky rice are crowd-pleasers. Spice levels can always be requested mild (mai phet).
  • Many attractions offer free or reduced entry for children under 100–110cm height. Bring photo ID for age verification.
  • River boats and longtail boats in tourist areas provide life jackets on request — always ask.
