Quick Answer

Is Koh Kood worth visiting?

Thailand's most untouched beautiful island — eastern Gulf of Thailand

Koh Kood — sometimes spelled Koh Kut — sits in the far eastern Gulf of Thailand near the Cambodian maritime border, and its remoteness has been both its greatest challenge and its greatest gift. The 6-hour journey from Bangkok (bus to Trat, then ferry) has kept the mass-tourism infrastructure that transformed Koh Samui and Koh Phangan largely at bay. What visitors find instead is Thailand's fourth-largest island in a state of almost pristine natural beauty: rainforest interior, dramatic waterfalls, crystal-clear rivers, and beaches so white and uncrowded that photographs look implausibly serene.

The interior of Koh Kood is genuine tropical rainforest — home to monitor lizards, hornbills, macaques, and dense canopy that the island's small permanent population of fishermen and coconut plantation workers has never had reason to clear. Khlong Chao Waterfall, the most accessible of several cascades, can be reached by river kayak or motorbike. The coconut and rubber plantations that cover much of the island are still actively worked, and the fishing villages on the north and west coasts maintain a way of life that feels far removed from the tourist circuits of the Gulf's more popular islands.

Accommodation on Koh Kood leans significantly toward the luxury end — the island has attracted a cluster of beautiful boutique and high-end resorts that understand exactly what they are selling: seclusion, beauty, and personalised service in an unspoiled setting. There are budget options, but they are more limited than on other islands. Connectivity is weaker here — Wi-Fi is unreliable in many places, making Koh Kood genuinely suitable for digital detox but less ideal as a long-term working base. For couples, honeymooners, and travellers who have earned a truly special island escape, Koh Kood delivers at a level few places in Thailand can match.

Top Highlights

🏖️

Pristine Beaches

Hat Khlong Chao, Hat Khlong Hin Dam, and Ao Salat offer wide white-sand beaches with clear turquoise water and minimal development. Koh Kood's coastline regularly features in Thailand's most beautiful beach rankings.

💦

Khlong Chao Waterfall

The island's most impressive waterfall, reachable by river kayak or a short walk from the road. Swim in the natural pool at the base — cool, clear fresh water surrounded by rainforest.

🌴

Rainforest Interior

Koh Kood's interior remains genuine tropical rainforest. Motorbike or hike through coconut and rubber plantations, spot wildlife, and find viewpoints that reveal the island's extraordinary natural landscape.

🎣

Fishing Villages

The northern village of Bang Bao and the western settlement of Ao Salat are traditional Thai fishing communities where daily life is organised around the sea — a contrast to the luxury resort atmosphere elsewhere.

🤿

Snorkelling and Marine Life

The waters around Koh Kood support healthy coral reefs with seahorses, turtles, and reef fish. Snorkelling tours visit offshore reefs and the small islands of Koh Maak and Koh Rayang nearby.

Things to Do

  • Swim and snorkel at Hat Khlong Chao — one of Thailand's most beautiful beaches
  • Kayak upriver to Khlong Chao Waterfall and swim in the natural pool
  • Motorbike around the island's coastal road through coconut and rubber plantations
  • Visit Ban Bang Bao fishing village for fresh seafood and local life
  • Snorkelling day trip to offshore reefs and neighbouring Koh Maak
  • Sunrise walk on the eastern beaches before resorts wake up

Nightlife

Koh Kood has almost no nightlife. This is intentional — the island's appeal is precisely its peace and natural beauty. A few beachfront restaurants serve cold beer and cocktails into the evening. Resort bars provide a quiet setting for sunset drinks. Visitors seeking bars, clubs, or late nights should choose Koh Samui or Koh Phangan instead.

Safety Notes

Koh Kood is very safe. The main risk is motorbike accidents on narrow roads — ride carefully and wear a helmet. Bring sufficient cash from the mainland (ATMs are limited and often out of service). Ferries can be cancelled during bad weather — June to October carries genuine disruption risk. Medical facilities are extremely limited; serious injuries require evacuation to Trat or Bangkok.
