Chiang Mai in April

April is the most extreme month in Chiang Mai — Songkran transforms the old city into Thailand's most legendary water fight zone, while the hot-season haze peaks with air quality that can be poor in early April. A visit for Songkran is unforgettable; a general sightseeing trip in April is not ideal.

Hot and hazy. Temperatures 33–40°C with significant haze from agricultural burning. Air quality can be poor (AQI 100–200+) in early April before Songkran. Some rain begins in the second half of April as pre-monsoon storms arrive.

Crowds & Prices

Songkran (13–15 April) makes Chiang Mai's old city one of the world's biggest water fights. The moat road and Tha Phae Gate area are packed with locals and tourists. Thai families return home for the holiday, creating traffic and accommodation pressure.
