1

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

Chiang Mai's most revered temple sits atop Doi Suthep mountain at 1,073 m, offering panoramic views over the city and a sacred golden chedi.

Tip:

Climb the 309-step Naga staircase for the full experience, or take the tram. Visit early morning to beat the crowds and catch misty mountain views.

2

Wat Chedi Luang

The ruins of a massive 15th-century chedi at the heart of the old city. The Emerald Buddha resided here before being moved to Bangkok.

Tip:

Free talks with Buddhist monks take place here daily in the late afternoon — a genuine cultural exchange opportunity.

3

Wat Phra Singh

The most important temple within the old city walls — home to the revered Phra Singh Buddha image. Classic Lanna architecture at its finest.

Tip:

The monks' evening chanting at around 5–6 pm is a peaceful and atmospheric experience.

4

Wat Suan Dok

A serene temple with striking white chedis set in spacious grounds, and a famous monk chat programme for travellers.

Tip:

Monk Chat runs Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings — a great way to learn about Buddhist practice from resident monks.

5

Wat Umong

An ancient forest temple with tunnels, a tree-lined moat, and a ruined chedi. Unusual, atmospheric, and far fewer crowds than city-centre temples.

Tip:

Bring mosquito repellent. The forest walk through the temple grounds takes 30–45 minutes and is worth doing slowly.

6

Wat Chiang Man

The oldest temple in Chiang Mai, built by the city's founder in 1296. Houses two very old Buddha images and beautiful elephant buttresses.

Tip:

Often quiet compared to other temples despite its historical significance. Combine with a walk through the northern old city quarter.
