Best Hotels in Ayutthaya

Ayutthaya is Thailand's ancient capital, located 80km north of Bangkok on a river island at the confluence of three rivers. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city is dense with the ruins of temples, palaces, and monasteries from the Ayutthaya Kingdom (1351–1767 AD). Most tourists visit on a day trip from Bangkok, but staying overnight gives access to the ruins at dawn and dusk — the most atmospheric times — and allows exploration of the historic island at a relaxed pace.

Best for: Walking to ruins, atmosphere, convenience

The island at the city's core contains most of the major ruins. Staying here puts you within cycling or walking distance of Wat Mahathat, Wat Phra Sri Sanphet, and the elephant camp. Most guesthouses and boutique hotels are here.

Riverside (East Bank)

฿3,000–15,000/night

Best for: Views, romantic atmosphere, sunset dining

Across the Pa Sak River from the historic island. A handful of boutique hotels occupy colonial-era buildings with river views. Evening views of the lit-up ruins across the water are exceptional.

Booking Tips for Ayutthaya

  • 1

Rent a bicycle from your guesthouse for ฿50–฿100/day — the historic island is perfectly sized for cycling and you can reach all major ruins within 20 minutes.

  • 2

Arrive early at Wat Mahathat (the famous Buddha head in tree roots) to avoid crowds — before 8am is ideal and the morning light is better for photography.

  • 3

The boat tour around the island (departing from the pier near Phom Phet Fortress) gives a different perspective on the ruins and takes about 90 minutes.
