About Old City
The Old City of Chiang Mai is precisely what its name suggests: a square kilometre of the original Lanna capital founded in 1296, still enclosed by its original moat and partial city walls, containing over 30 Buddhist temples that range from the ornate grandeur of Wat Chedi Luang to the intimate neighbourhood shrines of individual quarters. Walking the lanes between temples on a quiet morning — when mist clings to the moat and monks in saffron collect alms before breakfast — remains one of the most atmospheric experiences in northern Thailand.
The Old City's tourism infrastructure is mature and well-developed without being overwhelming. Dozens of guesthouses occupy converted wooden houses and old shopfronts, many with traditional Lanna architectural detail. The Tha Phae Gate area on the eastern edge serves as the main commercial hub, with the Tha Phae Road running east into the Night Bazaar district. The Sunday Walking Street on Wualai Road, just outside the southern wall, is the best crafts market in Chiang Mai and arguably in northern Thailand — a kilometre of genuine handicraft vendors, silver smiths, textile stalls, and street food that operates with refreshing authenticity compared to Bangkok's more touristified equivalents.
For first-time visitors to Chiang Mai, staying in or near the Old City is the correct choice. Everything that makes Chiang Mai different from a Thai beach resort is accessible on foot or a short songthaew ride: the temples, the cooking schools, the elephant sanctuaries (day trips), the night market, the mountain food of the north. The Nimman district offers more contemporary comforts, but the Old City delivers more of Chiang Mai's essential character.
