Thailand's coastlines — both the Andaman Sea to the west and the Gulf of Thailand to the east — provide outstanding conditions for a wide range of water sports. The warm, clear water, generally calm conditions in the dry season, and excellent infrastructure of instructors and hire operators make Thailand one of the world's most accessible destinations for water activity at every skill level. Whether you are learning to dive for the first time, taking your first surfing lesson, or looking for advanced windsurfing conditions, Thailand has a venue for it.
Scuba diving is the most developed water sport in Thailand. Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand is one of the most popular dive training destinations in the world — PADI Open Water courses cost 9,000–12,000 THB (including equipment and certification), roughly a third of equivalent courses in Western countries, with warm, calm, marine life-rich water and dozens of dive schools. The Similan Islands (accessible from Khao Lak) offer liveaboard diving on some of Asia's finest reefs. Kitesurfing has its prime location in Thailand at Hua Hin on the upper Gulf coast, where the winds from both monsoon seasons create year-round conditions — the wind window is approximately August to January. Pranburi, south of Hua Hin, is also a growing kitesurf destination. Sea kayaking in Phang Nga Bay, navigating between limestone karst formations and into sea caves and hongs (collapsed cave systems filled with water), is one of Thailand's most distinctive experiences — guided tours from Phuket or Krabi take you through cathedral-scale limestone chambers accessible only by kayak at low tide. Wakeboarding is popular in Bangkok (Cable Park on Ramindra Road) and at several lake venues near Pattaya. Surfing is available at a few spots — Kata Beach in Phuket has small waves in monsoon season, and Phuket's west coast picks up swell from the southwest monsoon from May to September. Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is available at virtually every beach destination in Thailand.
