The traditional Thailand 'visa run' — a quick trip to a border crossing or nearby country to reset your stamp — has become both less necessary and more scrutinised in recent years. Immigration officers have become stricter about frequent border crossings without legitimate reasons. The better alternatives for 2026: Tourist Visa + Extension: apply for a 60-day Tourist Visa at a Thai consulate before entering (available from most Thai embassies); on arrival you get 60 days, then apply for a 30-day extension at any immigration office (฿1,900); total of 90 days without leaving. Much better than running after 30-day visa-exempt stamps. Thailand LTR Visa (Long-Term Resident): a 10-year visa for wealthy retirees (800,000 THB investment threshold), digital nomads/remote workers (65,000+ THB/month income), and highly skilled professionals; no 90-day reporting; no work permit needed for remote work; no annual Thai bank deposit requirement. Thailand Elite Visa (now Thailand Privilege): 5-year and 10-year options from ฿900,000–2,000,000; includes airport fast-lane, concierge services, and multiple-entry stays; legitimate long-term option for those who can afford it. Education Visas: genuine language school or Muay Thai training enrollment provides a Non-Immigrant ED visa with 90-day stays extendable; legitimate schools in Chiang Mai and Bangkok cater specifically to this need. SMART Visa: for qualified tech workers with Thai employer sponsorship. The bottom line: if you plan to stay more than 60 days, a Tourist Visa (not a visa-exempt stamp) is the minimum sensible option; for 6+ months, the LTR Visa is now Thailand's best long-stay solution.
