Thailand's State Railway of Thailand (SRT) operates an extensive network connecting Bangkok with Chiang Mai in the north, the southern peninsula down to Butterworth (Malaysia), and the northeast through to Ubon Ratchathani and Nong Khai on the Laos border. Trains are not fast — the Bangkok to Chiang Mai Sprinter takes 11–12 hours — but they are comfortable, scenic, and surprisingly cheap. Overnight sleeper trains in particular are a joy: the rocking of the carriage, a cold Chang beer from the dining car, and waking up as forested mountains roll past are experiences that no budget airline provides.
The most popular route is Bangkok (Hua Lamphong) to Chiang Mai, served by several departures daily including the famous overnight No. 9 Sprinter. Second-class sleepers with upper and lower berths and air conditioning cost 700–1,200 THB — exceptional value for an overnight journey that eliminates a hotel night. Booking is via the official SRT website or Trainman (a popular third-party aggregator). Advance booking is essential for peak season and overnight trains. Southern destinations including Surat Thani (for ferries to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan), Hua Hin, and Chumphon are all well served. Train travel in Thailand rewards patience and a willingness to enjoy the journey as part of the experience.
