Thailand is not typically the first choice for dedicated surfers, but the country has genuine surfing possibilities that are well worth knowing. The Andaman coast (Phuket, Khao Lak, Krabi) catches the southwest monsoon swell May–October, with the most consistent waves at Kata Beach and Nai Harn Beach in Phuket. Kata Beach is Phuket's best surf spot — a long beach break that handles south to southwest swells, with consistent 0.5–1.5m waves during peak monsoon months (June–September). Wave quality is best in the morning before onshore winds develop. Surf schools operate from Kata during the season (Kata Beach Surf Shop, Phuket Surf): a 2-hour lesson costs ฿1,200–1,500 including board and instruction. Nai Harn in the south of Phuket also receives consistent swell during the monsoon. The Gulf of Thailand coast (Koh Samui, Hua Hin) has minimal surf — the enclosed geography reduces swell fetch. The best surfable waves in Thailand are not in the same league as Bali, Sri Lanka, or the Philippines — the swell window is seasonal and limited, reef breaks are uncommon, and consistent overhead waves are rare. Thailand is excellent for beginner surfing lessons and intermediate longboarding on the Andaman coast June–September. For dedicated advanced surfers, Khao Lak can occasionally produce better waves in large swell events. The surf and kitesurfing season partially overlap — when wind is strong for kite, it is typically too onshore for quality surf at the same beach.
