Importing pets to Thailand requires preparation starting at least 6 months before your travel date. The requirements for dogs and cats (the most common): microchip implanted (ISO 15-digit standard); rabies vaccination at least 30 days before entry but no more than 12 months before; rabies titre test (FAVN test, blood drawn at a government-approved laboratory) showing adequate antibody levels — the test must be done at least 30 days after the vaccination; a health certificate from a government-accredited veterinarian in your home country, issued within 7 days of travel; and advance import permits obtained from the Thai Department of Livestock Development (DLD) before departure. At Suvarnabhumi Airport, there is an Animal Quarantine Station in the cargo area — pets arriving in the cabin baggage must still be presented for inspection. Quarantine: Thailand does not impose mandatory quarantine for dogs and cats if all documentation is complete and the rabies titre test result meets requirements — non-compliant animals face mandatory quarantine at your expense. Vaccinations required: core vaccines (parvo, distemper, hepatitis for dogs; panleukopenia for cats) plus leptospirosis for dogs. Bringing your vet records with translation. Airlines: most major airlines allow pets in cabin (cats and small dogs) or as checked cargo — check each airline's specific policy as rules differ significantly. The entire process is manageable but requires lead time — starting the paperwork 6 months before moving is recommended.
