Bringing a pet to Thailand requires significant advance preparation — the Thai Department of Livestock Development (DLD) has strict import requirements and enforcement at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi airport is thorough. The requirements for dogs and cats entering Thailand: valid rabies vaccination (administered at least 21 days before travel and within 12 months); microchip (ISO 11784/11785 standard, 15-digit); health certificate issued by an accredited veterinarian within 10 days of travel; import permit from the Thai DLD (apply 4–8 weeks in advance); APHIS export certificate (for US pets) or equivalent from your country. Quarantine: Thailand does not currently require mandatory quarantine for pets arriving with correct documentation. However, airlines have strict temperature restrictions and documentation requirements. The process: apply for DLD import permit online (dld.go.th); ensure all vaccinations and documentation are in order; book cargo/cabin space with your airline well in advance (Emirates and Thai Airways generally have good pet policies). Finding pet-friendly accommodation: international hotel chains (Marriott, Accor) increasingly offer pet-friendly rooms; many Airbnb and long-term rental properties in Bangkok's expat areas accept pets; always confirm before booking. Vets in Bangkok: the Animal Hospital at Siam Square and Kasetsart University Animal Hospital are well-regarded for expat pets. Monthly healthcare for a medium dog: ฿2,000–5,000 including food and basic preventive care.
