Thailand is a remarkable fishing destination that receives far less international attention than its quality warrants. Freshwater fishing: Thailand has developed an extraordinary network of purpose-built fishing parks containing trophy-sized specimens of arapaima, redtail catfish, alligator gar, giant snakehead, and giant Siamese carp — fish that dwarf anything catchable in European or North American freshwater. Bungsamran Fishing Park in Bangkok (the most famous) holds arapaima to over 200 kg and redtail catfish to 50 kg+; fishing by the hour (฿500–1,000/hour) or full day (฿3,000–5,000). Pilot 111 Fishing Park and Jurassic Mountain Fishing Lake near Chiang Mai offer similar large-fish experiences in scenic settings. Saltwater fishing: the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea produce excellent offshore fishing — sailfish, marlin, wahoo, mahi-mahi, and giant trevally (GT) are the target pelagic species. Koh Chang, Koh Samui, and Phuket all have offshore charter operators (฿5,000–15,000/half day, full boat). The Mergui Archipelago (Myanmar border, accessible from Phuket) is legendary for massive GT on surface lures and poppers — one of Asia's top light tackle game fishing destinations. Fly fishing: the Doi Inthanon streams in Chiang Mai province hold snakehead and jungle perch; mountain streams in Mae Hong Son have wild trout-like cyprinids suitable for fly fishing. Fishing licence requirements: freshwater public fishing requires a licence (฿100/year), available from district offices; commercial fishing parks do not require one; saltwater charter fishing needs no licence. The GTxxx Facebook groups and fishing forums have excellent current information from active Thai anglers.
