Thailand has one of Southeast Asia's most accessible English teaching markets — thousands of foreign teachers work in Thai schools at any given time, from backpackers doing a short TEFL stint to career teachers on long-term contracts. The baseline requirement for most positions is a TEFL or CELTA certificate (120 hours is standard) and a bachelor's degree in any subject. Native English speakers from the US, UK, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and South Africa have the easiest time finding positions. Non-native speakers from countries where English is an official language (Philippines, India, South Africa) can find positions but may face more scrutiny.

Salaries range widely by location and school type. Government schools in Bangkok or major cities pay ฿25,000–35,000 per month (USD 700–1,000). International schools with accreditation pay ฿60,000–120,000 for qualified teachers. Language centres like Wall Street English and ECC pay ฿35,000–50,000 for full-time work. Private tutoring adds significantly to income for established teachers. The school year runs June–October (first semester) and November–March (second semester), with two significant holiday periods in March–May and October. Most teachers report that Chiang Mai offers the best quality of life for teachers — manageable salary goes further, the expat community is established, and the lifestyle is excellent. Bangkok pays more but costs more. Rural placements (common through government programmes) pay less but provide free accommodation and deep cultural immersion. Visa requirements: a Non-Immigrant B visa is required for legal employment, usually arranged by the school. Teaching without the correct visa is technically illegal; enforcement is inconsistent but risky.
