Thailand has made significant strides in offering legal long-term stay options for remote workers and digital nomads since 2022, with the LTR (Long-Term Resident) visa and DTV (Destination Thailand Visa) being the two main pathways in 2026. LTR Visa (Long-Term Resident Visa): introduced in 2022 and targeted at high-net-worth individuals and remote workers. Work-From-Thailand Professional (WFT) category requirements: employment with a foreign company (not Thai company); minimum income of $80,000 USD over the previous 2 years; health insurance with minimum $50,000 coverage; valid work contract. Benefits: 10-year visa (2+2+2+2+2 or 10-year direct depending on application); tax exemption on foreign income (the single biggest practical benefit for digital nomads); 80% personal income tax exemption for income from Thai sources if employed; no 90-day reporting requirement (reports every 12 months instead); multiple re-entry permit included. Application: through the Board of Investment (BOI) at the Thailand Privilege Card Company. DTV (Destination Thailand Visa): introduced in 2024; simpler and cheaper than LTR; targets freelancers, remote workers, and those with "soft power" activities. Requirements: minimum 500,000 THB (~$14,000 USD) in savings or income evidence; proof of remote work/freelance work. Benefits: 5-year visa (180 days per entry, renewable); no working eligibility for Thai companies. Application: at Thai embassies and consulates abroad. TR (Tourist Visa) and METV (Multiple Entry Tourist Visa): technically not work visas; using a tourist visa while working remotely is legally ambiguous in Thailand; widely practiced but carries theoretical risk of visa revocation. For serious long-term nomads: the DTV is the most accessible legal remote work option; the LTR is the gold standard for higher earners. Thailand Privilege Card: a separate paid visa program (from 900,000 THB one-time) that provides long-term stays; less suitable for remote workers than LTR/DTV but worth knowing about for retirees.
