Thailand's train network connects major cities comfortably and cheaply — but booking in advance is essential for popular routes, and the online system takes some navigating.

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) operates an extensive network connecting Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, the south (Surat Thani for Koh Samui ferries, Hat Yai, and the Malaysian border), and the northeast (Nakhon Ratchasima, Ubon Ratchathani). Trains are slow compared to buses for most routes but enormously more comfortable, scenic, and atmospheric. Classes: 1st class (private air-conditioned cabins, overnight sleepers available, ฿600–1,400), 2nd class (air-conditioned seats and sleeper berths, the recommended standard for most journeys, ฿200–800), and 3rd class (wooden benches, fan-only, very cheap at ฿15–150). For overnight sleepers, 2nd-class air-conditioned lower berths offer a genuinely comfortable experience — arriving in Chiang Mai or the south refreshed rather than cramped on a bus. Booking: the official SRT booking site (www.thairailwayticket.com) enables advance purchases up to 30 days ahead. The site works but is dated — have patience. Alternatively, 12Go Asia and Baolu are third-party booking platforms with a smoother interface and English support. Popular routes (Bangkok–Chiang Mai overnight train, Bangkok–Surat Thani) book out 1–2 weeks in advance during peak season (December–January). At Bangkok's Hua Lamphong station, tickets can be purchased in person up to 30 days ahead — arrive at the advanced booking window (ฝั่งจอง) rather than the same-day queue.
