Grab is the go-to transport app throughout Thailand, available in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Koh Samui, Pattaya, and most major cities. Understanding how to use it properly saves significant money and hassle. Service types in Thailand: GrabCar — private car service (sedan); most common, comfortable, air-conditioned. GrabBike — motorcycle taxi; faster in traffic, cheaper, not available in all cities. GrabExpress — parcel delivery service. GrabFood — food delivery (excellent in Bangkok). JustGrab — matches you to the nearest available car or taxi; often fastest. GrabTaxi — metered taxi hailed through the app; sometimes slightly cheaper than GrabCar for longer distances. Avoid surge pricing: surge pricing applies during peak hours (7–9am, 5–8pm weekdays), rain (everyone opens Grab simultaneously during downpours), major events, and weekends in entertainment areas. Tips: request a few minutes before you need to leave to get a pre-surge quote. Walk one or two blocks away from peak demand zones (hotel lobbies, malls, BTS exits) before requesting. Try changing your destination slightly — sometimes the algorithm prices differently for nearby drop-off points. Use GrabBike for short distances in traffic (often 40–60% cheaper than GrabCar). Bangkok Grab tips: Grab works throughout Bangkok but during peak hours, consider BTS Skytrain for distances over 3km — it is often faster. For Suvarnabhumi Airport pickups, the designated Grab pick-up area is on level 1, opposite the public taxi stand. Book a few minutes before exiting baggage claim. Chiang Mai Grab tips: Grab is readily available in Chiang Mai. The red songthaew system (shared pickup trucks) is often faster and cheaper for popular routes within the old city — ฿20–40 per person vs ฿70–120 by Grab. Islands: Grab operates on Koh Samui but not on Koh Phangan or Koh Tao — local motorbike taxis and private scooter rental are the alternatives. Grab safety features: share your ride details with a contact, use the in-app safety button if concerned, check driver name and plate before getting in. Tipping: not expected but possible through the app — 10% is appreciated for good service.
