Chiang Mai is one of Thailand's best-value cities, but even by its affordable standards there is an astonishing amount available completely free. Free temples: Wat Chedi Luang — Chiang Mai's most impressive ancient temple, with a ruined chedi that once housed the Emerald Buddha. Free entry to the main compound (฿40 charged only for the monk chat area). Wat Phra Singh — the old city's most beautiful working temple, with the highly revered Phra Singh Buddha image. Free. Wat Suan Dok — atmospheric temple with white chedis and a free monk chat programme on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (5–7pm). Wat U Mong — forest temple in a serene garden setting 15 minutes from the moat; beautiful tunnels, outdoor Buddha gallery, and resident deer. Free. The entire old city moat area: cycling or walking the 1.5km rectangular moat path is one of Chiang Mai's best experiences — temples, street food, and local life around every corner. Free. Tha Phae Gate area: the iconic gate and the piazza in front of it is the social heart of the old city. Free walking territory. Markets: Sunday Walking Street (Wualai Road, 4–10pm) — the best street market in Chiang Mai; 2km of handicrafts, hill tribe silver, clothing, food, and street entertainment. Free to wander. Saturday Walking Street (Wualai Road) — same stretch; different vibe. Night Bazaar (Chang Klan Road, nightly) — nightly market free to browse; best for people-watching. Viewpoints: Doi Suthep viewpoint (reached by the cable car for ฿50 if you don't want to hike 300 steps) — free to visit the temple itself is ฿30 but views of Chiang Mai from the road are free. Huay Tung Tao Reservoir — a 20-minute drive from the city; stunning mountain lake, perfect for a picnic. Free entry (฿20 parking). Outdoor free activities: Mae Sa Waterfall (national park, ฿100 entry but 30 minutes north — worth it for a day trip). Cycling the old city moat (rent a bicycle for ฿50–100/day). Morning monk alms-giving ceremony (Talat Warorot, early morning — observe respectfully, free). Cultural experiences: sit in on a free meditation session at many temples. Chiang Mai University campus is free to walk — a beautiful, park-like setting.
