Internet quality has become one of the primary factors in where digital nomads and remote workers choose to base themselves. Thailand's connectivity varies dramatically between cities and islands — from world-class fibre in Bangkok to frustratingly patchy connections on some smaller islands. Bangkok: consistently ranks in the top 10–15 cities globally for digital nomad internet quality (Nomad List 2026). Median wifi speed in cafes and coworking: 100–300 Mbps. AIS Fibre and True Online both provide 500 Mbps–1 Gbps home fibre plans from ฿599–799/month. Coworking spaces have dedicated business-grade connections. 5G mobile coverage is dense. Reliability is excellent. Verdict: exceptional. Chiang Mai: Thailand's #1 digital nomad city by popularity and infrastructure. Similar cafe and coworking wifi speeds to Bangkok (100–300 Mbps typical). AIS and True fibre available across most residential areas from ฿499/month. The highest concentration of dedicated coworking spaces per capita in Thailand. Nomad-optimised cafes like Yellow (Nimmanhaemin), Ristr8to, and Gravity are open 8am–10pm with fast wifi and power at every seat. Verdict: exceptional. Phuket: Patong and Kata areas have solid cafe wifi (50–150 Mbps) but Phuket's coworking scene is less developed than Bangkok or Chiang Mai. Fibre available in residential areas. Mobile 5G is strong. Verdict: good for most tasks; limited coworking options. Koh Samui: reasonable wifi in Chaweng and Bophut (30–100 Mbps in cafes); fibre available in most residential areas. Growing coworking scene. Video calls generally reliable. Verdict: good. Pattaya: strong mobile and fibre infrastructure. Large expat population drives good internet investment. Several coworking spaces. Underrated for digital nomads. Verdict: good. Islands with challenging connectivity: Koh Phangan: the town area (Thong Sala) has reasonable wifi but remote bungalows often rely on 4G with inconsistent speeds. Coworking spaces are improving but still limited. Koh Tao: more challenging — remote from submarine cables. Cafe wifi is patchy (10–50 Mbps); adequate for email but video calls can be problematic. Not ideal as a full-time base for work-dependent nomads. Koh Lipe, Koh Kood, Koh Libong: minimal infrastructure. Suitable for "offline retreats" but not for bandwidth-intensive remote work. Practical advice: always test cafe wifi with Speedtest before committing to a work session. Have a 5G SIM as a backup hotspot — AIS and True Move H provide excellent 5G in cities; 4G elsewhere. A good 5G SIM costs ฿299–599/month for unlimited data with 30–100 GB high-speed priority.
