The Koh Samui–Koh Phangan–Koh Tao triangle in the Gulf of Thailand is one of the world's great budget travel circuits. Regular ferries connect the islands; there is accommodation for every budget; and the snorkelling, diving, nightlife, and beaches are world-class. Here is how to do the route efficiently and cheaply. Getting there from Bangkok: the cheapest option is an overnight train to Surat Thani (from ฿600 third class, ฿900 second class, 9–10 hours) then ferry to Koh Samui (฿200–250). The combined Lomprayah or Seatran ferry-bus packages from Bangkok are convenient and cost ฿800–1,200. Flights to Koh Samui (Bangkok Airways) cost ฿2,000–4,000 but that airport is expensive — flying to Surat Thani and taking the ferry is cheaper. Island-to-island ferries: Koh Samui to Koh Phangan: Seatran/Lomprayah ferry, 30–45 minutes, ฿250–350. Multiple daily departures. Koh Phangan to Koh Tao: Lomprayah or Songserm, 60–90 minutes, ฿350–450. Koh Tao back to Bangkok: overnight Lomprayah combo (ferry + night bus or train to Bangkok) from ฿700. Budget accommodation: Koh Samui budget: Chaweng has budget guesthouses from ฿400–700/night. Mae Nam (north coast) is cheaper and calmer — bungalows from ฿400–600. Koh Phangan budget: Haad Rin (Full Moon Party area) is most expensive during full moon week. Srithanu and Haad Salad on the west coast have great value bungalows from ฿400–700. Koh Tao budget: Mae Haad port area has the densest budget options from ฿300–600. Budget eating: each island has a night market with meals from ฿50–80. Noodle shops and som tam stalls serve lunch and dinner from ฿60–100. Sample budget for the whole circuit: 10 days island hopping with budget accommodation, 2 meals/day at local restaurants, transport — approximately ฿12,000–18,000 ($340–500 USD) excluding international flights and diving.
