Thailand has developed one of Asia's most interesting specialty coffee cultures over the past decade — driven partly by the country's own northern highland coffee production (Doi Chang and Doi Inthanon areas produce genuinely excellent single-origin beans) and partly by a generation of Thai baristas trained to international competition standards. The best specialty coffee cities: Chiang Mai is the undisputed capital — as the gateway to Thai highland coffee growing regions, the city has a density of exceptional independent roasters; highlights include Ristr8to (multiple locations, consistently excellent), 9th Street Coffee, and Akha Ama (a social enterprise working directly with Akha hill tribe coffee farmers). Bangkok's café scene is centred around the Silom/Sathorn area and newer Ari/Samsen neighbourhoods; Roots Coffee (multiple locations) is the benchmark Bangkok specialty chain; Rocket Coffee and Coffee Beans by Dao are also excellent. Phuket has several notable cafés in Phuket Old Town, particularly for photography-worthy architecture paired with good espresso. Thai iced coffee culture: cha yen (Thai iced tea) and cafe yen (Thai iced coffee with sweetened condensed milk) remain iconic and are available at every street stall for ฿20–30; specialty cafés charge ฿80–180 for cold brew and single-origin pour-overs. For coffee farm visits: Doi Chang village (Chiang Rai) and Akha Ama's farm near Chiang Mai offer one-to-two day experiences including picking, processing, and cupping.
