Google Maps is the primary navigation tool for Thailand and is excellent — offline map download is essential (download the Thailand region on WiFi before travelling to islands or rural areas). For Bangkok traffic, Google Maps' real-time traffic layer is accurate and genuinely useful for planning routes and departure times. One limitation: Thai addresses are notoriously inconsistent (soi numbers, house numbers, and moo numbers can be confusing), so GPS pin-drops are often more reliable than address search. Grab's built-in navigation is useful for finding establishments by name even without an address. Apple Maps has improved significantly in Thailand and covers major tourist areas adequately. Maps.me is the best offline alternative — downloadable map data that works completely without internet, including turn-by-turn navigation. It is particularly good for hiking trails, minor roads, and areas with weak signal. For Bangkok public transport specifically, ViaBus (Bangkok) and the Transitbangkok website show real-time BTS/MRT routes and journey times. For driving and motorcycling in cities, Waze has a strong Thai user base and crowd-sourced traffic alerts. Google Translate's camera function should be installed alongside your maps app — it can read Thai street signs and addresses in real time using your phone camera, which is invaluable when addresses are written only in Thai script.
