Best Vegan Food in Bangkok

Bangkok is one of Asia's most vegan-friendly cities — Thailand has a long tradition of jay (Buddhist vegan) cooking, and a polished modern plant-based scene has grown up alongside it. Look for the yellow-and-red 'jay' (เจ) flag for traditional Buddhist vegan, or hit Sukhumvit for boutique plant-based restaurants and cafes.

Tips

  • Look for the yellow-and-red Thai 'เจ' flag — that's the official Buddhist vegan marker, stricter than Western vegan (no garlic, onion).
  • Standard restaurants often add fish sauce or shrimp paste by default — say 'jay' (เจ) or 'mangsawirat' (vegetarian) when ordering.
  • Annual Vegetarian Festival (October, dates follow lunar calendar) — half of Bangkok goes vegan for 9 days and street stalls bloom yellow flags.
  • Both 7-Eleven and Tops supermarkets now stock vegan ready-meals, soy milk and plant-based snacks.
